BREAKING NEWS: Oakland lands Cespedes

According to several sources the Oakland Athletics have agreed to sign Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a 4 year $36MM deal.  This is a big surprise as it appeared the Miami Marlins were well on their way to signing him to a six year

Billy Beane is all smiles after signing Cespedes

deal.  This contract will enable Cespedes, who is said to be 26, a chance to become a free agent once again at 30, giving him a possibility of cashing in on a second big contract.  According to Peter Gammons, Cespedes’ representatives “felt the A’s wanted him more than anyone else.”  For the A’s this is a nice signing considering they have been looking for offense anyway they can get it, plus they are looking for some excitement in hopes of getting a new ballpark soon.

What does this mean for the Cubs?  As we discussed in the Soler article it appeared the Cubs were out of the Cespedes running anyways, but does this mean the Marlins will focus their attention towards Soler having missed out on Cespedes?  Only time will tell.

  1. This was a good signing for Oak. It’s for less than what I thought Cespedes would get and it puts him in a “low” pressure situation compared to what it would have been like for him if he had signed in Miami.

Based on Oakland’s track record, I would expect Cespedes to be with the A’s through 2013 and then he will hit the trade market if it doesn’t look like they will compete in 2014.

    1. Totally agree, the expectation level just went from thru the roof to somewhere in the middle. I also agree with you that if things aren’t working out, and Cespedes is still productive he will be added to the long list of “cut bait to replenish system” deals that Beane has done in the past.

Will be very interesting to see how he pans out, especially in that ballpark, not exactly an offensive players dream location, but I think $9MM was about the top of what he was going to see in a deal.

Thanks for following and commenting Russel.
