The Cubs losing streak now stands at four as Garza and the Cubs could not stop their losing ways on Wednesday as the Marlins beat the Cubs 9-1. Garza had been good in his first two outings, but tonight was not his night. The Marlins were powered by two early two-run homeruns which proved to be more than enough. The Cubs bats were once again nowhere to be found as Mark Buerhle allowed six hits and one run is 8 innings of work.
The scoring started in the third when Garza walked the first batter of the inning, John Buck. Donnie Murphy followed with a two-run homer that gave the Marlins a 2-0 lead. The Marlins would add to their lead when Hanley Ramirez stepped to the plate with two out and a runner on first. With a 1-1 count Ramirez launched a mammoth shot to left center for his second homer in as many days. Just like that the Cubs were down 4-0. The Marlins were not done as they added three more in the sixth including an RBI double by Gaby Sanchez and an run scoring single by the hard hitting Mark Buerhle. By the time the Cubs hit again they were down 7-0 and the game was virturally over.
The Cubs would get a huge run in the seventh as Baker doubled to lead the inning off and would later score on an Ian Stewart ground out. That was the extent of the Cubs offense for the night and the Marlins would add one more run in each of the following two innings off of Rodrigo Lopez eventually winning the game 9-1. The win moved the Marlins record to 6-6 while dropping the Cubs to 3-9. The Cubs will send Jeff Samardzija to the mound on Thursday hoping to end this four game losing streak.
Born On Third’s Thoughts
Another dismal effort for the Cubs. Matt Garza was terrible and the Cubs bats were not much better. Not much more to say about it. They just need to be better. As we discussed yesterday, as much as they have been in some of these games and probably should have won some of them, there have already been way too many that were like Wednesday. They need to be better and speaking as optimistic as I can I think they will get better. By the way Marlon Byrd got a hit today, so he is officially on a hot streak.
