Hard to believe that the Major League season is already a month old, we take a look back at the month that was and select the top hitter and pitcher on the north side. Players of the Month after the jump.
One of the first decision’s Dale Sveum made in Spring Training was to announce that Bryan LaHair would be the starting first baseman, and would occupy a spot in the middle of the order. A lot of Cubs fans were unsure about this, in fact most of them doubted the move and were very vocal about it. Bryan LaHair delivered his own words to those doubters with his bat during April. LaHair didn’t just have a good April, he had a great April and that is clear when you compare him to the other first basemen in the Majors. LaHair’s .390 average is #1 among all first basemen, his 5 home runs have him tied for first, his 8 doubles are good for 3rd in the league, his 14 RBI’s ranks 8th, and his OPS of 1.251 is the best in the league. I would say that was quite the statement month for LaHair, good enough to make him the Cubs hitter of the month.
Bryan LaHair Highlights:
April 9, 2012 – LaHair’s Long HR
April 13, 2012 – LaHair’s Grand Slam
April 17, 2012 – LaHair’s Big RBI Single

April 24, 2012 – LaHair’s Game Tying Blast
April 25, 2012 – LaHair Goes Deep Again
April 28, 2012 – LaHair’s Ringing RBI Double
April 30, 2012 – LaHair’s Huge Game Tying HR
Matt Garza didn’t start Opening Day, but he has played the role of staff ace all April. With Ryan Dempster going to the DL, Garza had to step up and anchor the staff, and he has. Opponents only hit .175 against Garza in April, on top of that Garza also had a sparkling 3.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. All things considered Garza probably deserved better than his 2-1 record as he ran into some tough luck in one of his starts. Garza’s April performance only adds to what Theo Epstein is trying to sell to Cubs fans and other teams around the league. Matt Garza is a guy that a team can build a rotation around, and he just might be solidifying his spot at the top of the Cubs rotation for years to come, for now, he’s the Cubs pitcher of the month.
