Iowa 4-15-14

Full Box Score

Looked like it was going to be a rough one right away tonight as the Zepghyrs put up five runs in the second inning, but Iowa bounced right back with four in their half of the second.  Unfortunately that was all that Iowa could do with the bats as they dropped this one to New Orleans 8-4.

At the Plate:

  • Chris Coghlan was 1-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored.
  • Chris Valaika continued his hot start, he was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and is now hitting .333 on the season.
  • Logan Watkins had a big two run single tonight, he went 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Carlos Pimentel was beat up tonight, he took the loss as he worked five innings, giving up seven runs (oops) on six hits, while walking five (oops, again), and striking out five.
  • Yoanner Negrin, a personal favorite, was solid out of the pen.  Negrin worked 3.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits, while walking none, and striking out three.
  • Marcus Hatley mopped things up as he worked two-thirds of an inning, striking out both guys he faced.

Daytona 4-15-14

Full Box Score

The Daytona Cubs can’t find any offense, and recently their pitching has faltered as well, that’s not a good mix.  The trends continued tonight as the D-Cubs could only manage to score three runs on nine hits in a 10-3 loss to red hot Dunedin.

At the Plate:

  • Pin-Chieh Chen had a solid game at the top of the order, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Tim Saunders is not having any trouble at the plate right now, he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, and two stolen bases tonight.  He is eight for his last fourteen at the plate, yikes.
  • Rock Shoulders had a big game tonight, he was 2-for-4 with a double, his first home run of the season, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Bijan Rademacher has been outstanding this year, it continued in this one, as he went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .379 on the season.

On the Mound:

  • Jose Rosario didn’t have much going for him in this one, he took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season.  He worked 4.1 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, on seven hits, while walking six, and striking out two, yuck.
  • Starling Peralta was really good out of the pen, he worked 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits, he didn’t walk anyone, and he struck out three.
  • Stephen Perakslis struggles in relief, he worked one inning, giving up two runs on two hits, while walking one, and he didn’t record a strikeout.

Kane County 4-15-14 game one

Full Box Score

The Cougars could only manage two runs on two hits in game one, and that was enough for another win.  19 year-old Jen-Ho Tseng was brilliant in picking up his first win of 2014.

At the Plate:

  • Ben Carhart is having a solid 2014 so far, and he was able to find some success in this one, he went 1-for-2 with a double, and a walk.
  • Yasiel Balaguert is unconsious at the plate right now, he was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .409 on the season.

On the Mound:

  • All Jen-Ho Tseng, all the time.  Tseng was stellar, he worked 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up six hits, while walking none, and striking out six.
  • Zack Godley was just as good out of the pen to pick up his second save of the season.  Godley worked 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit, while striking out four of the five guys he faced.

Kane County 4-15-14 game two

Full Box Score

Another light hitting game for the Cougars, and another win, how about that?  The Cougars are rolling and it’s because of their pitching, Blackburn followed Tseng with a “one up you” performance, and that was great to see tonight.

At the Plate:

  • Jacob Hannemann was 1-for-4 out of the lead-off spot, with his fifth stolen base of the season.
  • Carlos Penalver had the only run scoring hit of the game, for either team, he was 1-for-3 with a double, and an said RBI.
  • Ben Carhart capped off a productive doubleheader going 1-for-3 in the win.

On the Mound:

  • Paul Blackburn couldn’t have been much better tonight as he picked up his first win of 2014.  He worked six scoreless innings, surrendering one lone hit, while walking one, and striking out six, hot fire!
  • Jose Arias worked the final inning for the save, how’s this for a line?  One scoreless inning pitched, no hits, walked one, and struck out FOUR, in one inning, yep.

Daytona 4-4-2014

Full Box Score

At The Plate:

Still not much going on for the Daytona offense in game two, but it was nice to see them come back from a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings.  Pin-Chieh Chen had a solid game from the lead-off spot, going 3-for-5 with a double, and RBI, and a run scored.  The middle of the order came up empty again tonight, but the bottom of the order was productive.  Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, and was caught stealing.  For the second straight game Gioskar Amaya was solid, he went 1-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored.

On The Mound:

Jose Rosario got the start for Daytona, and struggled with his command for most of the night.  Rosario worked four innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while walking three, and striking out five.  Michael Jensen, and Andrew McKirahan each worked two scoreless innings out of the pen to get the game into extra innings.  Austin Reed took the loss for Daytona, he worked two innings, giving up one run on one hit, while walking one, and striking out three.

Tennessee 4-4-14

Full Box Score

At The Plate:

Not a lot of offense in this one, but just enough for the Smokies to win their first game of the season.  It was Kris Bryant once again, Bryant went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season, an RBI, and a run scored.  Dustin Geiger was able to get his first hit of the season, he went 1-for-4 with a single in the win.

On The Mound:

The other big news of the night was C.J. Edwards making his double A debut, and he didn’t disappoint.  Edwards worked four scoreless innings giving up one hit, while walking one, and striking out four, outstanding.  The rest of the Smokies staff was untouchable as well, P.J. Francescon took over for Edwards and took home the win.  Francescon worked three scoreless innings giving up two hits while walking one, and striking out two.  Armando Rivero was just about perfect in the late innings of this one, as he earned his first save of the season, Rivero worked two scoreless innings giving up one hit, while striking out four.

Iowa 4-4-2014

Full Box Score

At The Plate:

The Iowa Cubs are mirroring the big league club with the bats, and that’s not a good thing, they came up empty in a 9-0 loss to Memphis tonight.  Matt Szczur lead-off for Iowa and was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a stolen base.  That was it, Iowa only had two hits in the loss, they did draw five walks but were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

On The Mound:

Three bad innings, that’s all it took tonight as Memphis scored once in the fourth, three times in the fifth, and five times in the sixth.  Carlos Pimentel got the start for Iowa, and also took the loss, he worked five innings, giving up four runs on five hits, while striking out six.  Jonathan Sanchez was much worse, he worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on one hit (ONE HIT), while walking three, and striking out three.  Marcos Mateo, Blake Parker, and Zac Rosscup all had scoreless appearances out of the pen, but it was too little too late.

Thanks for reading!

SPOTLIGHT GAME

Daytona 7-8 line

Full Box Score

At The Plate – I know this is the “at the plate” section, but I have to talk about what you have already noticed, that big fat ZERO in the hit column for Dunedin.  That’s right, Daytona started Matt Loosen tossed a no-hitter today, more on that below.  The D-Cubs offense gave Loosen plenty of support early on as they scored seven times in the first three innings.  Zeke DeVoss was 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, a stolen base, and two runs scored.  Dustin Geiger continued his solid season going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .282 on the season.  Bijan Rademacher was productive today as he went 1-for-2 with his first home run of the season, two RBI’s, two walks (Cubs Way!), and two runs scored.

On The Mound – Two words, Matt, Loosen.  Loosen was brilliant (understatement, I know) as he was almost perfect going nine no hit innings while walking two and striking out nine.  Shortest “on the mound” recap in the History of ever.

The final out of Matt Loosen’s no-hitter!

At The Plate – Not much happening for the Cougars at the plate in this one as they were shut out and could only manage three hits the whole night.  Albert Almora was 1-for-2 in the loss and also had to leave the game early with an apparent leg/hamstring injury, he briefly stayed in the game but came out the next inning.  Marco Hernandez and Carlos Escobar each had one hit, all three Cougars hits were singles.

Daytona 7-6 line

Full Box Score

At The Plate – Daytona was cruising in this one as they led 6-0 into the bottom of the eighth inning, that’s when thing got uncomfortable.  Dunedin put five runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth to get within one, luckily the D-Cubs stopped the bleeding and held on to win 6-5.  Zeke DeVoss was productive out of the lead off spot going 3-for-5 with three RBI’s.  Ben Carhart continues his solid 2013 as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI’s, he’s now hitting .277 on the season with 38 RBI’s.  Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and an RBI, those are his first two doubles since being called up to Daytona (17 AB).  Pin-Chieh Chen was 1-for-2 with two walks (Cubs Way!), a triple, and two runs scored.

At The Plate – The Smokies fell behind quickly in this one and could never recover as they were trailing 7-1 by the bottom of the fourth en route to an 8-2 defeat.  Not much going offensively but the big news from the day and the game was the debut of Javier Baez, he went 1-for-4 with his first AA home run on his first AA swing of that bat.  Christian Villanueva has put together a pretty decent season so far, he was 1-for-4 with his eleventh home run of the year, and his forty-second RBI.  Rubi Silva had a solid game going 2-for-4 with two singles, he’s now hitting .264 on the season.

On The MoundAustin Kirk got the start for the Smokies and had a rough go of it as he suffered his third loss of the season.  Kirk worked two innings giving up six runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.  Yeiper Castillo was outstanding out of the pen going five innings giving up one run on four hits while walking three and striking out four.  Kevin Rhoderick struggled with his command again in this one, he worked two innings giving up one run on one hit while walking three (the command thing).

Full Box Score Game One / Full Box Score Game Two

At The Plate – Not a great day all around for Iowa as they lost both ends of the doubleheader to Albuquerque.  Logan Watkins was solid in game one going 2-for-4 with an RBI, and a walk, he also made his ninth error of the season.  Junior Lake continues his solid 2013 going 1-for-3 with two walks (Cubs Way!) in game one, he’s now hitting .319 on the season.  The Cubs worked six walks in game one (good!) however they were 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position (bad!).  Game two saw much of the same as the Cubs worked four walks, but could only manage five hits, and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

On The MoundJake Arrieta made his Cubs debut in game one and was only able to work one inning before the rains came.  Arrieta struggled with his command as he gave up one run on one hit while walking two and striking out two in his inning of work.  Esmailin Caridad took over and also took the loss as he went three innings giving up two runs, one earned, while walking one and striking out two.  In game two Barret Loux was outstanding but still wound up on the losing end as the Cubs couldn’t muster any offense.  Loux went six innings giving up one run on four hits while walking four and striking out six.

At The Plate – The Iowa Cubs are officially on a roll, with last night’s win they have won three in a row, and six of their last seven games.  Brian Bogusevic probably belongs in the Majors at this point, but there is nowhere to put him, he went 3-for-5 with an RBI, he’s now hitting .364 on the season.  Brad Nelson was 2-for-4 with two singles in the victory.  Edwin Maysonet had a huge game going 2-for-4 with his third home run of the season, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.  Luis Flores came up with a rare huge offensive game going 2-for-2 with two walks, two doubles, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

Smokies 5-25 line

Full Box Score

At The Plate – Nothing went right for the Smokies in this one as they could only manage three hits all night, and two runs in a 7-2 loss.  Arismendy Alcantara was one of the few Smokies to come through last night, he was 1-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season, two RBI’s, and a run scored.  Rubi Silva, and Tim Torres were the only other Smokies to record hits in this one, both singles; they each had a stolen base as well.

On The MoundAlberto Cabrera rarely gets beat up, last night was one of those rare times that he did.  Cabrera worked six innings giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out seven.  A.J. Morris wasn’t much better out of the pen going 1.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits while walking three.  Brian Schlitter doesn’t allow runs, he just doesn’t, he worked 1.2 scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking one and striking out one.

Daytona 5-25 line

Full Box Score

At The Plate – Daytona only needed one inning to get the victory in this one; they scored five times in the second inning and held on for dear life in a 5-4 victory of the Flying Tigers, what a name, eh?  Jorge Soler was 1-for-4 with his eleventh double of the season, and a run scored in the victory.  Daytona made their hits count as they could only manage six all game, and the two guys at the bottom of the order came up huge.  Taiwan Easterling (8 hitter) was 1-for-3 with two RBI’s and a run scored, while Tim Saunders (9 hitter) was 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season, three RBI’s, and a run scored.

On The Mound – Nice to have Kyler Burke back on the mound, he was brilliant in this one to earn his first victory of the season.  Burke went five scoreless innings giving up one hit while walking two and striking out two, he lowered his ERA to 0.90 on the season.  Eduardo Figueroa found some trouble, but kept the damage limited going 1.1 innings giving up one run on three hits while walking one.  Hunter Cervenka was touched up, gasp!  That never happens!  Cervenka worked 1.2 innings giving up three runs on two hits while walking two and striking out three.  Luis Liria came on to save the day, and the game going one scoreless inning giving up one hit while walking one and striking out one to earn his second save of the season.

Kane County 5-25 line game 2

Full Box Score

At The Plate – The runs came early and often in game two as the Snapper and Cougars totaled nine runs in the first three innings; luckily the Cougars were on the right side of the score, leading 5-4.  The Cougar pitching settled down after that, and the offense tacked on two runs in the fifth en route to a 7-4 victory.  Oliver Zapata getting a chance to lead off was solid, he was 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBI’s, and a run scored.  Albert Almora only had one hit in game two so there really isn’t much to say about him in game two….  Dan Vogelbach was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored in the victory, he’s now hitting .291 on the season.  Rock Shoulders was tired of slumping, so he busted out in game two, he was 2-for-3 with two home runs (11,12), three RBI’s, and two runs scored.  Bijan Rademacher was 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a run scored, he’s now hitting .323 on the season.

On The MoundBrian Smith was roughed up a bit in this one, and earned a no decision thanks to his red hot offense.  Smith worked four innings giving up four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.  Ian Dickson was awesome out of the pen and was rewarded with his second win of the season.  Dickson worked three scoreless innings giving up on hit whiles walking one and striking out four.
