Cubs Sputter in the Clutch, Fall to Gee and the Mets

Dillion Gee was way too much for the Cubs Saturday afternoon as he scattered seven hits over eight innings en route to a 3-1 victory over the Cubs.  The Cubs could only manage one hit in six opportunities with runners in scoring position in the loss.  The Mets got on the board early plating a run in the second than cashing in to more in the third on a two-run homer from Ike Davis.  That was the extent of the scoring against Jeff Samardzija today as he went seven strong innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.  Samardzija fell to 6-8 on the season but closed out his first half with two much better starts lowering his ERA to 4.71.  As I mentioned the Cubs couldn’t get anything going against Gee.  A lead-off double from Luis Valbuena in the sixth inning led to the only Cubs run as he scored on a one out RBI single from David DeJesus.  Valbuena finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate raising his average to .224 on the season.  Anthony Rizzo extended his hitting streak to 8 games, but his streak of scoring at least one run ended at 7 games today.  Rizzo finished 2-for-4 with his fourth double of the season, he’s now hitting .386 since being called up.  Full box score and highlights after the jump.
