Today, the Cubs announced that Jeff Samardzija will open the season in Pittsburgh, as he did in 2013. Rick Renteria said it was an easy decision to make, and I would have to agree, Shark is the top guy while he is here with this group. I’m not sure Travis Wood was given any consideration, but wouldn’t be surprised if he was given his stellar 2013. Wood will follow Samardzija, and Edwin Jackson will pitch game three in Pittsburgh, just a short 17 days away.
Another day, another big home run from Alfonso Soriano, hopefully he can bottle this magic and take it North with him next week. Soriano has been on fire at the plate, hitting six home runs on the spring, he’s clearly motivated, and a motivated Soriano can be a dangerous one for the rest of the National League.
The Cubs hit the road today to face the Colorado Rockies. Jeff Samardzija takes the mound in one of his last opportunities of the spring to prove he belongs in the Cubs rotation. Based on Sveums rotation comments earlier it sounds like Samardzija is ticketed for the #3 spot. Here’s how the Cubs line up today. First pitch – 3:10 PM CST, available on MLB.com.

Dale Sveum announced today that Ryan Dempster will be the opening day starter for the 2012 Chicago Cubs season. Should be an awesome day at Wrigley Field on April 5th, as the Nationals and Cubs square off, Dempster vs Strasburg.
With games rapidly approaching, Dale Sveum and his coaching staff have set the first three spots in the rotation to open up the Spring
schedule this weekend. Rodrigo Lopez will get things started, he will be followed by Ryan Dempster, and Matt Garza. Dale Sveum was quick to caution fans trying to read too much into Dempster being ahead of Garza, saying that they will determine the rotation to start the season sometime in the middle of spring training. Lopez gets the first crack to prove he belongs at the back end of the Cubs rotation. Other competitors for the four/five spots in the rotation per Sveum are Randy Wells, Travis Wood, and Chris Volstad. It looks more and more like it will be something along the lines of Garza, Dempster and Maholm to head the rotation, but anything can and usually does happen in the Spring.
