It doesn’t get any worse than this, 8 innings of dominant stuff from Dempster only to have Carlos Marmol come in and crap all over it. Not the first time either, as Marmol has been an absolute disaster this year. After building a 3-0 lead behind solo home runs from Castro, LaHair (what else in new), and Soto, yes Soto, the Cubs were sitting pretty. Then the wheels fell off. Marmol faced five batters in the ninth and retired none of them en route to yet another blown save. Rafael Dolis was able to keep the Cubs alive by cleaning up Marmol’s mess, but the damage had already been done, on the scoreboard and mentally. The Cubs were done after Marmol blew the save, it was obvious, and the Reds made it official in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Rolen to win 4-3. Full box score, and highlights after the jump.
The weather is miserable in the Chicagoland area today, but it’s not as bad as the Cubs, they are ice-cold. Thanks to a rocky outing from Chris Volstad, and some bad defensive work, stop me if you’ve heard this before, the Cubs have dropped their sixth in a row. Right from the hop it was apparent that the Cubs probably didn’t have a chance today. Before the sparse crowd could even get settled the Reds were up 4-0 in the top of the first inning against Volstad. Things never really got better for the Cubs as every time they tried to mount a comeback the Reds were able to tack on to their lead. When it was all said and done, the Reds walk out with a 9-4 victory, in which the Cubs almost had more errors (3) than runs (4) and hits (5). Full Recap after the jump.
