After trailing all night the Iowa Cubs were able to tie the game up at two in the eighth only to see New Orleans walk-off in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 win.

At the Plate:

  • Juan Perez got a chance out of the lead-off spot and came through; he went 2-for-5 with his first homer of the year, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Albert Almora is really swinging it right now; he went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and a run scored; he’s now hitting .368 on the season.
  • Matt Murton (!) got the start in left tonight; he went 2-for-4 in the loss.
  • Munenori Kawasaki was 1-for-2 with two walks; clearly he has taken the approach of the major league club down to Iowa with him.

On the Mound:

  • Drew Rucinski was brilliant last night, but had to settle for a no-decision. He worked six innings, giving up two runs on five hits while walking two, and striking out ten.
  • Carl Edwards Jr. had a nice bounce back effort last night; he worked a scoreless inning while striking out one.
  • Spencer Patton struggled with command but battled through it; he worked a scoreless inning, giving up one hit while walking two, and striking out one.
  • Brandon Gomes took the loss in this one; he worked just 1/3rd of an inning, giving up one run on two hits.

A tough loss for the Smokies as they rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth then watched as the Biscuits scored three times in the ninth en route to a 5-4 victory.

At the Plate:

On the Mound:

  • Tyler Skulina got the start and struggled with finding the plate; he worked 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits while walking four, and striking out one.
  • Gerardo Concepcion might actually be figuring it out; he was good again last night. Concepcion worked 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out two.
  • Juan Paniagua was also solid in relief; he worked two scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking one.
  • David Garner had a rough go of it, and was hung with the loss. Garner worked one inning, giving up three runs on three hits while walking one, and striking out two.

The Pelicans didn’t have much going offensively in this one, but they found just enough as they scored three times in the eighth to beat the Winston-Salem Dash 4-1.

At the Plate:

  • Ian Happ has had a really solid start to the year; he went 1-for-3 with a walk, and is now hitting .296 on the season.
  • Yasiel Balaguert was one of the offensive heroes last night; he went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s, and has now knocked in eight on the season.
  • Daniel Lockhart went 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored in the win.
  • David Bote provided the big blow in this one; he went 1-for-4 with his first home run of the season, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Brilliance from Zach Hedges; he worked seven innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking one, and striking out four.
  • James Farris was just as good in relief, and picked up his second save of the season. Farris worked two scoreless/hitless innings while walking one, and striking out three.

Full Box Score

Eight runs over the first three innings put this one to bed early.  The South Bend Cubs pounded out thirteen hits and eight runs on their way to an 8-4 laugher last night.

At the Plate: (There’s a lot)

  • Eloy Jimenez had a solid game; he went 2-for-3 with a walk, and two runs scored.
  • Eddy Martinez broke out of a small slump; he was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, he now has seven RBI’s on the season.
  • Daniel Spingola has been red hot as of late; he went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s, and a run scored; he’s now hitting .405 on the season.
  • Tyler Alamo has been great in the early going this year; he went 3-for-4 with a double, and an RBI; he’s now hitting .455 on the season.
  • Sutton Whiting, P.J. Higgins, Donnie Dewees, and Matt Rose all finished the night with one hit a piece.

On the Mound:

  • Justin Steele has had a rough start to 2016, but last night was a step in the right direction. Steele worked five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits while walking one, and striking out six to pick up his first win of the year.
  • Craig Brooks was good once again in relief; he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking one, and striking out five.
  • Scott Effross was also solid; he worked two innings, giving up one run, unearned, on three hits while striking out two.

After falling behind 4-0 early the Iowa Cubs fell just short in their comeback attempt as they dropped a nail biter to Round Rock, 4-3.

At the Plate:

On the Mound:

  • Stephen Fife was roughed up in this one, he worked three innings, giving up four runs on five hits while walking three, and striking out five.
  • Jean Machi was brilliant, he worked two scoreless innings while walking one, and striking out three.
  • Felix Pena was just as good, he worked two scoreless innings, walking one, and striking out two.
  • J. Riefenhauser, and Miguel Mejia each worked a scoreless inning to keep things close.

The Smokies couldn’t muster much offense in their quest to move to 2-0 on the season as they could only scratch across one run in a 2-1 loss to Mobile.

At the Plate:

On the Mound:

  • Paul Blackburn struggled early, giving up five hits over the first two innings, but that was it for the night. Blackburn worked five innings, giving up one run on five hits while striking out two.
  • Michael Jensen was solid out of the pen, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking one, and striking out one.
  • Corey Black picked up the loss in this one, he worked one inning, giving up one run on two hits while walking one, and striking out one.
  • Andury Acevedo worked a scoreless inning while striking out one.

The Pelicans came up just short in their attempt at coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the sixth inning.  Myrtle Beach pulled to within one before falling to Frederick 7-5.

At the Plate:

  • Rashad Crawford had another good night, he was 2-for-4 with a walk, but was also picked off twice, oops.
  • David Bote was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored in the loss.
  • Cael Brockmeyer showed off his power, he was 1-for-4 with his first homer of the season, two RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Charcer Burks had a huge night, he was 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Zach Hedges got the start tonight, and picked up the loss. He worked 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits while walking one, and striking out six.
  • Dillon Maples struggled, he worked just 1/3 of an inning, he gave up an unearned run on one hit while walking two, and striking out one.
  • Ryan McNeil was decent out of the pen, he worked 2.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out three.
  • Jordan Minch worked one innings, giving up one run on two hits while walking one.

A messy game for the South Bend Cubs as they made six (SIX) errors on their way to a snow shortened 6-3 loss to West Michigan.

At the Plate:

  • Matt Rose went 1-for-2 with a walk, one of four for the Cubs in this one.
  • Ian Rice was 1-for-2 with a run scored, and a walk in the loss.
  • Bryant Flete was the offensive star tonight, he went 2-for-3 with a triple, and two RBI’s.

 

On the Mound:

  • A weird night for the Cubs start Justin Steele. Steele worked 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, all unearned, he made three (!) errors while walking three, and striking out three.
  • Casey Bloomquist worked two innings out of the pen, giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits while walking one, and striking out three.
  • James Norwood was tremendous, he worked 1.1 scoreless innings, he walked one, and struck out three.

Walk-off!  The Pelicans improved to a seasons best seven games over .500 with a 2-1 win over Salem thanks to a Billy McKinney walk-off dinger!  You can also thank Duane Underwood for dominating on the mound.

At the Plate:

  • Mark Zagunis is an on base machine, he was 0-for-2 with three walks in the win.
  • Billy McKinney is similar to Zagunis in regards to being one of those on base machines, he was 1-for-1 with FOUR walks, said walk-off dinger, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Jacob Rogers, and Trey Martin each had one hit, both singles.

On the Mound:

  • Duane Underwood Jr. got the start tonight, and was brilliant.  He worked seven innings, giving up one run on three hits while walking one, and striking out four.
  • Juan Paniagua was solid out of the pen, he worked two scoreless innings while striking out one.
  • Michael Heesch picked up his second win of the season, he worked a scoreless inning in doing so.

Tennessee Smokies 5-7 Final

A tough loss for the Smokies as they saw an early 4-0 lead slip away in a 5-4 loss.  The Smokies scored four times in the first inning and couldn’t find anymore offense the rest of the way.

At the Plate:

  • Albert Almora has picked up where he left off before the injury, he was 1-for-4 with a run scored, he’s hitting .310 on the season.
  • Kyle Schwarber was solid in this one, he went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Bijan Rademacher had the big hit for the Smokies, he was 1-for-4 with a double, and three RBI’s.
  • Elliot Soto was the best of the bunch tonight, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

On the Mound:

  • Corey Black got the start, and he struggled with his command, he worked five innings, giving up three runs on four hits while walking four, and striking out seven.
  • Fernando Cruz was outstanding out of the pen, he worked three scoreless innings, giving up one run, unearned, on one hit while striking out four.
  • Stephen Perakslis picked up the loss in this one, he worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on three hits.

South Bend 5-7 Final

Things got a little close late in this one but the South Bend Cubs hung on to beat Bowling Green 3-2.  Not many teams can say that as Bowling Green boasts a 17-11 record on the year, tonight the Cubs had just enough.

At the Plate:

  • Charcer Burks has been great this year, it continued tonight, he was 1-for-3 with two walks, and two RBI’s.
  • Justin Marra found some extra base magic, he was 1-for-3 with a double, and a walk.
  • Jesse Hodges was solid as well, he went 1-for-3 with his fifth double of the year, a walk, and a run scored.
  • Jeffrey Baez had a nice game, he went 1-for-3 with a walk, and a run scored, maybe that will get him going.
  • Gleyber Torres continues to get on base, he was 1-for-4 with a walk in the win.

On the Mound:

  • Zach Hedges got the start, and he does what he usually does, put up zeroes.  He worked five scoreless innings, giving up three hits while walking two, and striking out four.
  • Ryan McNeil was decent out of the pen, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two.
  • Jordan Minch was touched up, he worked 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking one, and striking out two.
  • James Farris had his shortest outing of the year, but it was all he needed to pick up his third save of the year.  He worked a third of an inning to shut the door.

Iowa Cubs 5-7 Final

The Iowa Cubs didn’t have much going in this one, but found a way to push four runs across the plate in the seventh for a 4-1 victory in Nashville.

At the Plate:

  • Arismendy Alcantara has been flashing the power in Iowa, he was 1-for-4 with a walk, his fourth dinger, two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Mike Baxter has been solid all year, he was 2-for-4 with a run scored, he’s now hitting .314 on the season.
  • Jonathan Mota was right in the middle of the action, he went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the win.
  • John Andreoli, Chris Valaika, and Taylor Davis all had one hit tonight.

On the Mound:

  • Tsuyoshi Wada got the start, and continues to make a push to be promoted, he worked 5.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits while walking two, and striking out six.
  • Gonzalez Germen has been awesome in Iowa, he worked 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up his third win, he struck out two in the process.
  • Blake Cooper worked a scoreless inning to pick up his second hold of the year.
  • Brian Schlitter worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

An odd scheduling quirk as the SB Cubs open a series with Dayton on a Sunday, minor league baseball at it’s finest.  The Cubs jumped out to a quick three run lead in the third, and by the time the inning was over the game was tied at three.  The SB Cubs pitching held Dayton down the rest of the game allowing the bats to wake up and score five times en route to a 8-3 win.

At the Plate:

  • Gleyber Torres is hitting his stride, he went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI’s, a stolen base, and a run scored.
  • Jason Volser was all over the place, he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Rashad Crawford had a solid game from the nine spot, he went 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBI’s, and three runs scored.

On the Mound:

  • Zach Hedges got the start and picked up the win, he worked five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, while walking one, and striking out two.
  • Jasvir Rakkar was good once again, he worked two scoreless innings, surrendering zero hits while walking one, and striking out three.
  • James Norwood was outstanding as well, he worked a scoreless inning, giving up two hits while striking out two.
  • Tommy Thorpe closed things out, he worked a scoreless inning, surrendering zero hits, while walking one, and striking out one.

One night after a thrilling comeback win, the Pelicans couldn’t find any offense as they could only muster three hits in a shutout loss.  The Pelican pitching was solid, but that doesn’t mean much if you can’t score.

At the Plate:

  • Chris Denorfia, who is rehabbing from an injury, went 1-for-2 with a double.
  • Mark Zagunis was out in right field today, he went 1-for-4 in the loss.
  • Jeimer Candelario was 1-for-3 tonight, he’s now hitting .250 on the season.

On the Mound:

Tennessee Smokies 4-12 Final

The Smokies made some noise early on, then couldn’t push anymore runs across the plate the rest of the game.  By the second inning it was 6-1 Smokies then that was it as far as scoring runs goes.  The Braves were able to score once in the 4th, and once in the 9th to make it close but they still fell to the Smokies 6-3.

At the Plate:

  • Elliot Soto got things done at the top of the order tonight, he was 2-for-6 with a run scored.
  • Albert Almora had another solid game, he was 2-for-5 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored.
  • Christian Villanueva had a productive day, he was 2-for-5 with three RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Dan Vogelbach continued his hot start today, he went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI’s, and a run scored.

On the Mound:

  • Rob Zastryzny got the start, he worked 3.1 innings giving up two runs, one earned on three hits while walking three, and striking out five.  Unfortunately he was hit by a batted ball in the foot and had to leave the game.
  • Stephen Perakslis was outstanding, he worked 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit while walking one.
  • Michael Jensen was solid today, he worked two scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking one, and sriking out one.
  • Hunter Cervenka struggled in this one, he worked 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit while walking two, and striking out two.
  • Andres Santiago earned the save by retiring one hitter, he worked a third of an inning, while walking one.

Another outstanding effort from the Iowa Cubs today as they pounded Memphis 7-2 to earn a series split.  The long ball was on display all day as Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, and Jonathan Mota all went deep, dingers!  The Cubs pitching held their own and it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.

At the Plate:

  • John Andreoli did his job at the top of the order today, he went 1-for-3 with two walks, a double, and a run scored.
  • Addison Russell is on fire right now, he hit 3-for-5 with a dinger, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.  He’s now hitting .389 on the season.
  • Kris Bryant did it again, he was 1-for-4 with his second homer in as many days, three RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Jonathan Mota had a huge day, he went 3-for-4 with a homer, an RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Adron Chambers had another solid game, he went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and a double.

On the Mound:

  • Barret Loux got the start for Iowa and was erratic for the most part, he worked 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while walking three, and striking out three.
  • Drake Britton was brilliant today, and picked up the win, he worked 2.1 scoreless innings, surrendering zero hits while walking one.
  • Zac Rosscup, Armando Rivero, and Blake Parker all worked a scoreless inning in relief to close out the Redbirds.
