8/30: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Here is a quick look at the Cubs minor league recap for Thursday, August 30th.  When the AZL Cubs playoff game ends we will have a full recap of that game.

FULL BOX SCORE

Boise scored two in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as they lost to Everett 4-3.  What else is new Stephen Bruno was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  His hit streak now sits at 20.  Rock Shoulders hit a pinch-hit two-run home run in the ninth.  Albert Almora was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Dan Vogelbach also had a hit in the loss.  Justin Amlung started and took the loss going two innings allowing one run on two hits.  James Pugliese pitched the next four innings allowing two runs and striking out four.  Su-Min Jung and Tyler Bremer combined to throw the last three innings, with Bremer giving up a run and striking out two.

Cedar Rapids put up four big runs in the 10th inning to beat Peoria 11-7.  The Chiefs had a lot of nice nights on the offensively.  Pin-Chieh Chen was 3-for-4 with two walks, a triple, three runs scored, and a stolen base.  Wes Darvill also had three hits, including a double and an RBI.  Jorge Soler was 2-for-6 with an RBI and Sergio Burruel also had two hits including a double and two RBIs.  Zeke DeVoss had a hit and an RBI as did Jacob RogersTimothy Saunders, Oliver Zapata, and Bijan Rademacher all had a hit in the loss.  Joseph Zeller started and pitched 6.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits.  Sheldon McDonald and Larry Suarez pitched the next 2.1 innings, but Luis Liria took the loss giving up the four runs in the 10th.

Going into the ninth tied Brevard County scored two and Daytona one, so the final ended up 6-5 Brevard County.  Kyle Hendricks started and pitched four innings allowing three runs on seven hits.  Matthew Spencer and Hunter Cervenka combined to pitch the next 2.1 innings giving up one run and striking out four.  Eduardo Figueroa took the loss as he allowed the two runs in the ninth inning.  John Andreoli had a nice night going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.  Javier Baez was 1-for-4 with a home run and Christian Villanueva had a hit and an RBI.  Rebel Ridling was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored and Elieser Bonne knocked in a run with a hit in the loss.

Tennessee beat Pensacola on Thursday 4-2.  Dallas Beeler started and pitched five innings allowing two runs, one earned on four hits, while walking two and striking out four.  After Casey Harman pitched a scoreless sixth, Trey McNutt pitched an outstanding inning as he struck out the side and didn’t allow a base runner.  Brian Schlitter notched his six save as he struck out four over two innings.  The Cubs offense used the long ball as all four runs accounted for via the home run.  Logan Watkins, Justin Bour, and Matt Cerda all connected with Cerda hitting a two-run homer.  Jae-Hoon Ha was the only other Smokies player to have a hit in the win.

Thursday was not a good night for Iowa losing to Nashville 6-1.  Yonner Negrin started and took the loss as he pitched five innings allowing three runs, two earned on six hits.  Jaye Chapman struck out two in a scoreless inning of work, but Miguel Socolovich gave up three runs in his inning.  Rafael Dolis pitched the final frame, not allowing a run and striking one out.  Adrian Cardenas was responsible for the only Cubs run as he was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Tony Campana also had one hit and he scored the Cubs lone run, he also stole his 18th base at Iowa.  The Cubs had five more hits in the loss, as Thursday was not a very good night.

8/26: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Sunday’s minor league recap.  Daytona did not play as they had a scheduled day off.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs won a big one on Sunday beating the Athletics 5-2.  Duane Underwood started and pitched the first 2.1 innings giving up two hits and allowing no runs.  Juan Paniagua got the win striking out three over the next 1.2 innings.  After Carl Lang gave up one run in his inning Anthony Prieto pitched the next two, followed by Carlos Martinez-Pumarino who finished this one off giving up a run, but striking out three in two innings.  Ben Carhart had another nice night at the plated going 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Trevor Gretzky got his average over .300 as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored in this one.  Carlos Penalver and Jeff Baez each had two hits a piece with Baez knocking in one run.  Shawon Dunston had a double and an RBI in the Cubs win.  With the win the Cubs are now only one game in back of the Athletics for the division lead.

After winning the division on Saturday, Boise came back Sunday and lost 5-1 to Vancouver.  Felix Pena got the start and took the loss allowing four runs on five hits over 4.1 innings.  He also walked three and struck out five.  Su-Min Jung and Tyler Bremer combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings on Sunday.  The Hawks had a few highlights at the plate, however.  Jeimer Candelario ended the night 2-for-3  and Darien Martin also had two hits.  Stephen Bruno had yet another hit in this one and also drove in the Cubs lone run.  Gioskar Amaya and Marco Hernandez each a hit in the Boise loss.

Peoria was all over Wisconsin from the get go, eventually winning 10-3.  Jeffry Antigua was outstanding on Sunday pitching seven strong innings allowing no runs on three hits, while striking out seven.  Pete Levitt pitched the final two frames allowing three unearned runs in the ninth inning.  Dustin Geiger led the way offensively going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Jorge Soler go into the fun as well going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs..  Jacob Rogers also had two hits, including his first home run with Peoria.  The top of the order did their job as well, as Zeke DeVoss and Pin-Chieh Chen each had two hits.  DeVoss added a run and an RBI and Chen scored four runs and drove one in as well.  Oliver Zapata and Sergio Burruel each had hits with Zapata adding an RBI in the Chiefs victory.

Tennessee scored one in the bottom of the eighth to win the game 4-3.  Eric Jokisch was pretty good in this one giving up three runs on eight hits in seven innings.  He also walked one and struck out four, his ERA now sits at 2.97.  Trey McNutt continued to pitch well out of the bullpen pitching the final two innings and getting the win.  Jae-Hoon Ha was outstanding at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI, and a runs scored.  Elliot Soto was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rubi Silva had a hit and an RBI of his own.  Matt Szczur also contributed with  hit and a run scored in the Smokies victory.

Iowa scored one in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough losing 4-3 to Oklahoma City.  Chris Rusin got the start and pitched good, but took the loss.  He pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out seven.  Blake Parker tossed the final two innings allowing one run and striking out two.  James Adduci, Blake Lalli, and Matt Tolbert all were 2-for-4 with Adduci knocking in a run and Lalli scoring two.  Brian Esposito had a double and an RBI and Adrian Cardenas pinch hit with an RBI single in the Cubs loss.

8/17: Around the Cubs Minor League System

Our daily trip through the Cubs system.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs out hit the A’s, but also made five errors and lost 4-3.  Ryan McNeil got the start going three innings allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out two.  Rafael Dolis pitched another scoreless innings in relief.  The fourth inning is really where the defense cost the Cubs as Corbin Hoffner gave up three runs, only one earned in two innings.  Alvido Jimenez took the loss allowing one run on two hits in two inning of work.  Yasiel Balaguert had another nice night at the plate going 2-for-4 including a triple and an RBI.  Carlos Penalver and David Bote also had two hits, Bote had a triple and scored a run.  Alberto Mineo was 1-for-4 and drove in a run of his own.  Daniel Lockhart, Shawon Dunston, and Trevor Gretzky all had one hit in the loss.

Boise put seven early, but had to hold on to beat Tri-City 7-6.  The Hawks put up thirteen hits and had several players have a multi hit game.  Dan Vogelbach was 3-for-5 including a triple and an RBI.  Stephen Bruno had only one hit, but made it count hitting a three-run homer in the fourth.  Albert Almora continued his hot stretch going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  Izaac Garsez and Lance Rymel each had a two hits and they both drove in one.  Jeimer Candelario only had one hit, but drove in another run.  Rock Shoulders and Marco Hernandez each had a hit in the victory as well.  Justin Amlung started, but did not factor in the decision as he only lasted two innings allowing one run on three hits.  Michael Heesch pitched the next two innings and got the win for Boise.  James Pugliese and Su-Min Jung each struggled over the next three innings, but got the game to Eduardo Orozco with the lead.  Orozco closed out the game recording his fifth save as he pitched two scoreless innings striking out three.  Although they allowed Tri-City to mount a comeback it was good to see Boise hold on.

Peoria lost to Burlington on Friday 5-4.  Starling Peralta got the start and pitched pretty good giving up three runs, two earned on five hits in six innings.  He also struck out eight in the no decision.  Austin Reed took the loss in relief giving up two runs in his one inning of work.  Bryce Schafer struck out three in two scoreless innings.  Chadd Krist got back on track going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.  Wes Darvill and Dustin Geiger each contributed offensively with a solo home run a piece.  Timothy Saunders added a triple and Sergio Burruel also had a hit.  Jorge Soler was back in the lineup, but really struggled going 0-for-4 with three strike outs.  It has been a tough stretch for Peoria as of late.

Going into the eighth Daytona was tied at two, but gave up three runs in the inning and lost 5-2.  Kyle Hendricks started and went four innings allowing two runs on three hits in a no decision.  Kyler Burke continued his struggles since going to Daytona as he gave up three runs in five innings taking his seventh loss at Daytona.  Christian Villanueva had a nice night going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  John Andreoli and Nelson Perez each added two hits as well, both having a double.  Javier Baez had another hit and stole two bases, his first two since moving up.  Rafael Lopez added a hit in the losing effort on Friday.

Tennessee scored two in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 5-4 to Birmingham on Friday.  Starting pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee took the loss giving up four runs on nine hits in just 4.2 innings.  Trey McNutt gave up a run, but struck out two in his 1.1 inning of work.  Casey Weathers and Brian Schlitter combined to pitch the last two innings of scoreless baseball.  Rubi Silva was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Justin Bour, and Chad Noble all drove in a run without getting a base hit on Friday.  Junior Lake was 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.  Logan Watkins had a double and scored a run on the night as well.

Tied going to the eighth, Iowa put up four in the eighth and three in the ninth to beat Tucson 8-1.  Dave Sappelt had a big night going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double.  He also drove in four on the night.  Alfredo Amezaga also had three hits and scored two runs.  Diory Hernandez had a double and drove in two.  Greg Rohan and Jeff Frazier each had a hit and had an RBI a piece.  Nate Samson contributed to the victory with two hits of his own.  In his first start with the Cubs Horacio Ramirez went six strong giving up only one run on six hits.  Scott Maine got the win striking out three in his two innings and Jairo Asencio pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

8/1: Around the Cubs Minor League System

August 1, nightly recap of the minor leagues.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs had a double header on Wednesday, with each game being seven innings a piece.  The pitching did a great job in the first one winning 4-0.  The 43rd overall pick in this past years draft Pierce Johnson made his first appearance of the season.  He started and pitched one scoreless inning.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino improved to 4-0 pitching four scoreless innings in relief.  He gave up three hits, one walk, and struck out three, his ERA on the season is 0.93.  Steve Perakslis secured the shutout by striking out five in two scoreless innings.  Albert Almora was back in the lineup and leading off on Wednesday.  He delivered going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Jorge Soler was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three stolen bases.  Ben Carhart had a double and an RBI.

The AZL Cubs had a good time of it in game two as well defeating the AZL Indians 7-2.  Ben Carhart was 2-for-4 with twor runs scored and Yasiel Balaguert also had two runs with a run scored.  Trevor Gretzky had one hit and an RBI and Neftali Rosario collected two RBIs without getting a basehit.  Albert Almora didn’t have a hit, but collected his sixth RBI of the season and Jorge Soler was 0-2, but walked twice and scored two runs.  Brian Smith started for the Cubs and thew two perfect innings while striking out two.  Loiger Padron improved his record to 3-0 with his win in relief.  he gave up two runs, but struck out six in three innings of work.  Alvido Jimenez closed out the game striking out three in two scoreless innings.

Boise was back at it and won again on Wednesday.  After getting a big lead early, they gave up nine runs in the last four innings, but held on to win 14-10.  There were a lot of good things happening offensively in this one.  Xavier Batista was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs.  Jeimer Candelario and Dong-Yub Kim each had two hits and drove in three as well.  Stephen Bruno hit his first home run of the season, a two run shot in the third inning.  Daniel Vogelbach and Trey Martin each two hits with Martin scoring three runs.  Lance Rymel had quite a nice night going 3-for-4 with an RBI.  It was a tale of two games on the mound.  Su-Min Jung started and pitched well allowing one run on three hits in three innings, while striking out three.  Nathan Dorris got his first win of the season as he pitched the next two scoreless innings.  Unfortunately Tyler Bremer and Willengton Cruz both struggled, but a win is a win.

Peoria won a crazy one on Wednesday scoring three in the top of the ninth to win 11-10.  The day belonged to Dustin Geiger.  Geiger was 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and eight RBIs, yes eight RBIs.  He stole the show early and finished it late with a two run bomb that turned out to be the game winner.  Javier Baez had two more hits, including a double.  He also scored two runs and drove one in.  Zeke DeVoss and Pin-Chieh Chen each had two hits, with Chen scoring three.  Zach Cates started and didn’t have his best stuff, but came away with a no decision.  Bryce Shafer got the win striking out four of the five outs he recorded.  Austin Reed picked up his first save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth.  Congrats to Geiger on just an ubelievable game.

Daytona scored one in the fifth and one in the seventh to win a pitchers dual 2-1.  Lendy Castillo continued his comeback throwing four innings, giving up three hits and allowing an unearned run.  He had four strikeouts in the start.  Eduardo Figueroa got the win, his third of the season pitching three scoreless innings.  Scott Weismann and Jeffrey Lorick combined to pitch the last two innings, with Lorick earning his second save of the season.  Rubi Silva was 1-for-4, but drove in the two Cubs runs on Wednesday.  Ronald Torreyes continued hitting the ball going 2-for-3.  John  Andreoli and Taylor Davis each had two hits in the contest.  It was a good win for Daytona.

Because of rain Tennessee had another double header on Wednesday.  The first one was a continuation of the night before.  The Smokies got two in the fifth, winning 4-2.  There were a couple bright spots on the mound.  Dae-Eun Rhee started and took a no-decision pitching four solid innings only allowing one run on three hits.  Trey McNutt got the win in relief pitching three innings allowing one run on two hits and Kevin Rhoderick recorded his eighth save of the season striking out three in two scoreless innings.  Justin Bour was 1-for-4 with another RBI.  Greg Rohan went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Nate Samson was 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.

One was all Tennessee needed as  Justin Bour was the hero hitting a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh.  He now has 12 home runs and 86 RBIs on the season.  Dallas Beeler started and was tremendous allowing only one hit in five scoreless innings of work.  Brian Schlitter picked up his second win in relief pitching the final two frames.  Junior Lake, Nelson Perez, and Matt Cerda all had one hit a piece in the victory.  Two wins to start the month is the right way to start it.

Iowa was able to score six, but an eight run inning was way too much to come back from losing 11-6.  We’ll start with the offense in this one.  Brett Jackson was 3-for-5 with a double, triple, and a run scored.  Josh Vitters hit his 16th home run of the season and had two RBIs.  Greg Rohan, who was just promoted from AA was 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.  James Adduci collected two more hits including a triple and an RBI.  Ty’Relle Harris got the start and took the loss as he was not very sharp.  Michael Bowden did a very nice job striking out six in three innings and recently acquired Jaye Chapman threw a scoreless inning in relief.

All around it was a nice night for the Cubs minor leaguers with the only loss coming in Iowa.

7/27: Around the Cubs Minor League System

A quick look at the Cubs minor leaguers on Friday, July 27.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs dropped a low scoring game to the AZL Athletics 3-1.  Lendy Castillo got the start as he continues to work his way back allowing one run on two hits in four innings.  He struck out six and took a no decision in this one.  Tyler Bremer gave up two runs and took the loss.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino and Jin-Young Kim combined to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings, but the Cubs offense couldn’t come back.  The Cubs got their run in the first when Albert Almora hit a two-run double and then scored on a Jorge Soler RBI single.  Soler would add another hit on the night and stole a base.  Carlos Penalver was the only other Cubs player to record a hit on Friday.  This is not what we have come to expect from the Cubs, but they will get back on track soon.

Boise exploded to beat Tri-City 8-3.  The Hawks had five players with multi-hit games.  Daniel Vogelbach was one of those going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.  Gioskar Amaya and Marco Hernandez each had two hits, wtih Amaya driving in two.  Trey Martin and Xavier Batista also added two hits a piece.  Wilson Contreras connected on his second home run of the season, a three run shot in the second inning.  Willengton Cruz got his second win of the season out of the bullpen.  He pitched two strong innings striking out four.  James Pugliese started and gave up three runs in four innings of work.  Michael Heesch and Su-Min Jung each pitched well in relief.  After a tough 1-0 loss last night, it was nice to see Boise come back strong tonight.

Javier Baez gave Peoria a lead with a two-run shot in the eighth and the Chiefs held beating Cedar Rapids 3-2.  Baez’s 11th homer of the season turned out to be one of his biggest of his young career.  He finished the game 2-for-3 and is now hit a robust .341.  Wes Darvill also had two hits, including a double, a run scored, and an RBI.  Austin Reed recorded the win in relief, his fourth of the season.  Zach Cates got the start, pitching 5.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out seven.  Sheldon McDonald pitched two scoress inning in relief dropping his ERA to 1.91 on the season.  It has been exciting following Baez this year and he continues to impress.

Robert Whitenack and the staff were outstanding for the Daytona Cubs beating Bradenton 2-0.  Robert Whitenack got his first win since coming back from Tommy-John surgery.  He pitched five innings allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out four.  Eduardo Figuerora struck out four in three scoreless innings in relief.  AJ Morris closed the game out recording his second save of the season.  The offense lost Matt Szczur who was promoted to Tennessee was able to get enough to win.  Rebel Ridling hit his second home run of the season and had two hits.  Timothy Saunders also had two hits including a double and a run scored.  A big congrats to Robert and here’s to many more in the near future.

Jacksonville was able to score two runs in three different innings defeating Tennessee 6-4.  Junior Lake continued his hot stretch in this one going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Greg Rohan had two hits and connected on his fourth home run with the Smokies.  Juan Apodaca also had two hits and an RBI.  In his first game with Tennessee Matt Szczur went 0-for-4 with two strike outs.  Ty’relle Harris started and took the loss going 2.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits.  Zach Rosscup gave up two runs in 3.2 innings, but struck out an impressive six batters.  Casey Harman and Kevin Rhoderick also pitched in the loss.

Iowa wins, Iowa wins, Iowa wins.  It has been a rough go as of late so to beat Okalahoma City 5-0 is great to see.  Chris Volstad had his best start pitching eight scorelss innings.  He only surrendered four hits, walking three, and striking out five.  Alberto Cabrerea finished the game off throwing a scoreless ninth striking out two.  Alfredo Amezaga led off going 3-for-5 and scored a run.  Adrian Cardenas and Brian Esposito each had two hits with Cardenas hitting a double and scoring a run.  Dave Sappelt had a triple and drove in two on Friday.  Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson each recorded one hit and scored a run, Jackson also drove one in.  Hope this is signs to come for Chris Volstad and the Cubs.

7/2: Around the Cubs Minor League System

July 2nd Minor League recaps.

FULL BOX SCORE

The AZL Cubs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, but gave up two in the bottom half to lose 5-4.  In the defeat Dan Vogelbach had two hits including his second home run in as many days.  He drove in two on the day.  Cubs also had two hit performances out of Timothy Saunders, Daniel Lockhart, Ben Carhart, and Trevor Gretzky.  To go with his two hits Lockhart also drove in two and had a run scored.  Hunter Ackerman pitched three scoreless innings striking out three in the start.  Jin-Young Kim took the loss giving up two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth.  It was a tough loss for the Cubs, but hopefully they can come back strong in the next one.

 Boise gave up two runs in the bottom of the eigth and lost to Tri-City 7-5.  Despite the loss Gioskar Amaya was 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI’s.  Stephen Bruno also had two hits with a run scored and two RBI’s.  The Hawks also got hits from Jeimer Candelario, Chadd Kris, and Bijan Rademacher.  Starting pitcher Taylor Scott was pitching rather well until the fifth when he and Hayden Simpson combined to give up four runs and Simpson gave up one more in the sixth.  Tri-City completed the comeback in the eighth as Su-Min Jung gave up two runs and took the loss.

Not a good night all around the Peoria losing to Kane County 6-0.  Starting pitcher Jose Rosario had a rough second inning giving up five runs, but really settled down and ended up pitching seven innings.  In those seven innings he gave up six runs, four earned on ten hits while striking out seven.  Sheldon McDonald threw two really nice innings out of the bullpen striking out three and allowing only a walk.  Offensively there wasn’t much to talk about.  The Chiefs were only able to muster up three hits.  Those getting hits on Monday were Zeke DeVoss, Paul Hoilman, and Pin-Chieh Chen.

Daytona scored six runs in the sixth to win 7-3.  Elieser Bonne was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Matt Cerda was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.  Micah Gibbs also drove in two runs, and Rebel Ridling and John Andreoli each drove in one a piece.  P.J. Francescon to his first win of the season giving up three runs on five hits in six innings of work.  Ryan Searle and Brian Schlitter didn’t allow a run combining to strike out two in the last three innings of game.

Tennessee scored a lot early and one late holding on to beat Chattanooga 6-4.  Recent call-up Greg Rohan was 4-for-4 with two double, two RBI’s and one run scored.  Smokies also had two hits from Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, and Michael Burgess.  To go with Rohan’s two RBI’s the Smokies also had an RBI a piece from Justin Bour, Lake, and Ha.  Dae-Eun Rhee wasn’t great but he was good enough to get his fifth win of the season.  Tony Zych and Ty’relle Harris combined to pitch three innings and striking out three.  Frank Batista came on in the ninth to close the game, striking out one to record his 14th save of the season.

It was a scoreless game headed to the bottom of the seventh when Nashville scored four.  They ended up holding on to win 4-1 on Monday.  Chris Rusin got the start and was pretty good throwing six scoreless innings while striking out five.  Jeff Beliveau took the loss in relief giving up four runs in only .1 innings pitched.  Although the Cubs only were able to score one, there were some good things that happened.  Josh Vitters was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in the only Cubs run of the day.  Matt Tolbert and Dave Sappelt each had two hits on Monday and Brian Esposito was the only other Cub to record a hit.

FULL BOX SCORE

AZL Cubs had a nice night winning 11-2.  Jacob Rogers had a great night at the plate going 4-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored, and four RBI’s.  Trey Martin had three hits and three RBI’s on Thursday.  Ben Carhart and Carlos Penalver each had two hits.  Dan Vogelbach and Justin Marra each had a double and drove in a run.  Carlos Martinez-Pumarino got the win pitching five innings in relief giving no runs on three hits while striking out five.  Nathan Dorris and Ryan Hartman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  Hope to see more nights like this from the Cubs as the summer goes forward.

We have been waiting, and Boise finally delivered beating Spokane 12-2.  Chadd Krist was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and one driven in.  Wilson Contreras also was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three driven in.  Stephen Bruno had two hits with a run scored and an RBI.  Dong-Yub Kim hit his second home run of the season, a grand slam.  Ian Dickson was the beneficiary of all those runs earning his first win of the season pitching five innings, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits, while striking out six.  Eduardo Orozco, Rafael Diplan, and Su-Min Jung all pitched well in relief.  All in all it was a very good night for the Hawks.

Gerardo Concepcion was roughed up early, giving up four runs in the first, but settled down as he pitched six inning giving up five runs on six hits.  He took the loss and is now 2-6 with a 7.39 ERA.  Javier Baez had a great night at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored, and three stolen bases.  Dustin Geiger, Taiwan Easterling, and Oliver Zapata all had RBI’s on the night and Paul Hoilman had two hits.  Larry Suarez also struggled in relief giving up two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

It was a great night for the Daytona offense beating Dunedin 14-4.  Cubs got home runs from Ronald Torreyes, Arismendy Alcantara, and Rebel Ridling.  Arismendy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI’s.  Rubi Silva was also 3-for-5 including two doubles and drove in two.  Lead-off hitter Matt Szczur was on base five times.  He was 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI’s, three stolen bases, and three runs scored.    Robert Whitenack got the start but didn’t get the win pitching only four innings while giving up three runs, only one earned on six hits while striking out four.  A.J. Morris got the win in relief pitching two scoreless innings while striking out one.  Brian Schlitter threw another good outing in relief pitching a scoreless ninth.

Trey McNutt was not able to get out of the first inning on Friday pitching only .2 inning and giving up eight runs, four earned on six hits.  Ty’relle Harris threw four quality innings of relief giving up two runs, one earned on five hits, while striking out two.  The Smokies were pretty good at the plate scoring six runs on twelve hits.  Jae-Hoon Ha, Junior Lake, Michael Brenly, and Elliot Soto all had two hits on the night.  Nelson Perez and Brenly each hit a home run.  The Smokies also had RBI’s from Ha, Lake, Justin Bour, and James Adduci.

Chris Volstad pitched pretty good on Friday, but it wasn’t enough for Iowa losing 3-1.  Volstad gave up three runs, two earned on six hits in seven innings.  He also struck out seven and walked zero.  Matt Tolbert was great at the plate going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and a run scored.  Adrian Cardenas, Ty Wright, and Blake Lalli each had two hits.  Josh Vitters was finally held hitless and Brett Jackson went 1-for-5.  Jay Jackson struck out two and didn’t allow a baserunner in one inning of work out of the bullpen.
